  • Riley Lanfear, AIMS graduate project manager, collects water samples from Gibson Jack watershed in Pocatello, Idaho on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The Aquatic Intermittency Effects on Microbiomes in Streams team is studying how stream drying (intermittency) affects downstream water quality by measuring water chemistry, microbial DNA and activity, and stream discharge at different times of the year according to Lanfear.

  • Melissa Rivas works in the Molecular Research Core Facility lab on Monday, Feb. 28, 2022. Rivas, an undergraduate student at Idaho State University, is studying plant structures. “I am currently working on a microscopy project using a specialized fluorescence microscope. For this project, we take several high-resolution, three-dimensional images and then stitch them together to form a large picture with very fine detail,” said Rivas. This process allows Rivas and her colleagues to measure changes in plant structures. “[This allows us] to understand how the plant changes physically in response to environmental stressors.”
